HowTo - I want to impress

Wow! So you made it to the interview. Now what?
Well, you need to move things up a notch.

1. Keep calm

When you're in front of an employer, bear in mind they are trying to help you make a good impression. So, stay professional. Should you get a question where you don't have an answer then don't be afraid to admit it. However, if this happens often you're probably looking for the wrong job!
Another thing, it's nerve-wracking for an employer. They could make the wrong decision and potentially lose a great employee. So, have a think of this, your interviewers may be more nervous than you are!

2. Take a few good stories into the interview

Think of something you've done recently that would impress your friends.

For example, you might have gone skydiving or run a half-marathon. Try and drop the story into the conversation at a suitably appropriate point and don't feel embarrassed at telling the entire panel how much you enjoyed the skydive or how scared you were as you leapt into the void. Odds on, you're impressing them!

And when you impress them you're half way to getting the job!

Now, if you're asking, "But I don't have any good stories", get out there and bag that story. If you haven't got the cash, find a way to do it on the cheap.

3. Dress smartly

OK, so your mate turned up to an investment bank in his painting overalls and they were so blown away by his skills they hired him on the spot.

Ignore him.
Give yourself a chance and dress smartly.

But don't dress so formally that you end up uncomfortably pulling at your collar. Find something that feels good to wear.

And try it on beforehand. Spend an hour or two wandering around a local bookshop in it.
