HowTo - Sending that initial email

Here are a few vital tips.

1. Your email address

Make sure your email address contains your name.

Why? Take a look for yourself. Which of these email addresses looks more professional:

  • hotsocks8866354@hotmail.com
  • john.smith@gmail.com

Apologies to the real john.smith@gmail.com!

This is really easy.If you’re using Gmail or Outlook you can easily enter your full name in the Options sections. And seriously, we know of employers who, faced with a thousand CVs, have deleted hundreds of emails based purely on the email address.

2. Use good English

Make sure your grammar is good.
Using sentences like:

Having seen details of vacancy Junior web designer OR
im looking 4 ajob:)

are poor English and will automatically get you deleted from a recruiter’s Inbox. Believe us, we've seen hundreds of emails with sentences like those!

3. Use positive copy

If you have a gap period in your CV, don’t say “Unfortunately I didn't have the chance to work professionally after that.”

It doesn’t create the right impression and is a sure-fire way to get your email dumped without any further consideration. Try something positive like "I took three months off to pursue my love of sailing".
